Jonah and I went to pick up a few things at CVS, since I had ECBs that expired today and I also got a coupon in my email.

Pampers box: $19.99, get $5ECBs. Used $2/1 (Pampers mailer) = paid $17.99, got $5ECBs.
Complete contact solution: $7.99, get $7.99ECBs. Picked this up for my brother.
Cherry Coke 2 liter: $0.99. Used $1/1 (Recyclebank) = free!
Used $7.50ECBs that I had, and a $5/$25 from my email = paid $13.99, got $12.99ECBs. Yep.

Then we went to Cub, where we picked up some freebies.

Mrs. T's Pierogies: $2.79. Used free coupon (HyVee freezer booklet) = free!
Jones sausage links: $1.89. Used free coupon (HyVee freezer booklet) = free!
Old Orchard frozen juice: $1.50. Used free coupon (HyVee freezer booklet) = free!
Organic bananas: $0.99/lb. Used 2lbs. free coupon for just over 2lbs. (came in my email) = paid $0.16 for the bunch!
4 20oz. Coke products: $1.69 each. Used 2 free coupons (My Coke Rewards) and two $1/1 printables (no longer available) = paid $1.38/4.
4 Mars candy: $0.69 each. Used two Get 2 free with purchase of 2 Cokes (in-store display) = 4 free!
Total spent: $2.16!

Target and Walmart Deals

We were out of milk, so I went to pick that up with my WIC vouchers. I stopped at Target first to get diapers, since Matthew's almost out, and my Target diaper coupon expired today.

Pampers Jumbo Pack and Wipes: $8.99 and $2.39. Used $2.50/both (Target mailer) and $1/1 wipes (P&G mailer). I had brought a $2/1 diaper coupon, but I didn't look closely enough at it, and it was for a box. Paid $7.88/both.
Up & Up Liners: $0.89. Used $0.75/1 Target printable (no longer available) = paid $0.14!
Up & Up Ibuprofen: $0.99. Used $0.50/1 Target printable = paid $0.49!
Ortega Taco Seasoning: $0.62 each. Used $1/2 (SS 06/26/11) = paid $0.24/2!
Wonka Exceptionals bar: $1.97. Used free catalina coupon = free! I added it to my "mom's secret candy bars" stash.
Spent $8.98 total. Saved $7.77.

So then I went to Walmart to grab the WIC stuff and a few things for Jesse. I also used some of my other good coupons. And, I discovered I had a free diaper coupon in my Walmart envelope. How nice!

4 sheets of Posterboard (not shown): $0.30 each.
2 Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo: $2.74 each. Used 2 free product coupons = free!

Pull-Ups Wipes: $1.37. Used $2/1 (came with sample) = free plus $0.63 overage!

Seattle's Best Iced Mocha 4-pack (if Jesse gets Coke Zero, I get a drink too!): $4.98. Used $2/1 (SS 06/05/11) = paid $2.98. I also have a coupon for a free single one of these, but I haven't seen the singles anywhere yet...
Total before coupons was $32.xx. Total after coupons was $15.32! Nice!

Nestle singles: $1.19, buy 2 get 1 for $0.01. Used B2G1 printable = paid $1.20/3.
Hershey's Dark and Almonds: $1.19, buy 2 get 1 for $0.01. Used B1G1 (SS 5/1/11) = paid $1.20/3.
Hershey's Air Delight singles: $1.19, buy 2 get 1 for $0.01. Used two Try Me Free CVS printables = paid $0.01/3!
Bumble Bee Tuna: $0.77 each.
Used $7.99ECBs from previous trips. Total spent: $15.94. Got $7ECBs (including $1 for using my reusable bags)!

One thing I like about CVS is they track your savings per year on the receipt. The spending is for April and May, I believe. Not too shabby...

I went to Walgreens solely to get diapers.

5 Walgreens Diapers: $4.99 each. Used $2/1 (Walgreens Infant Care - took off $10) = paid $14.95/5!
Captain Crunch: $1. Used $0.50/1 (RP 4/17/11) = paid $0.50!
I also found two coupon booklets, one in the beauty section and one in the pharmacy.

Our first stop of the morning was CVS. Jonah and I impressed our cashier Joyce with our massive savings...

Pampers Jumbo Pack: $8.99. I thought these were the ones to get $2ECBs, but apparently that was only certain sizes? I'm not really sure... Used $2/1 (P&G mailer) = paid $6.99.
2 Kleenex (200 ct.): 3/$4, or $1.33 each. Used $0.50/2 (April All You) = paid $2.17/2. Not the best price, but we were all out.
5 Fuze Juice: 5/$5, get $2ECBs when you buy 5. Used two $1/2 (SS 4/10/11) = paid $3/5, got $2ECBs!
2 Nescafe 10 packs: $1 each. Used two $1/1 (came with samples) = 2 free!
Crest Kids toothpaste: $1.99, get $1ECBs. Used $1/1 (P&G mailer) = paid $0.99, got $1ECBs!
Preparation H wipes: $3.99, get $3.99ECBs. (Sorry, Mankato friends, I took the last one at the Madison store). Used $2/1 printable = paid $1.99, got $3.99ECBs!
M&Ms and Snickers: 2/$1, get $1ECBs when you buy two (limit 1). Paid $1, got $1ECBs!

Jonah and I continued our shopping at Walgreens. There weren't a ton of deals that I was interested in, but there were a few sales on items on our weekly grocery list.

Huggies Wipes (216 ct.): $5.99 each. Used $2/1 (Walgreens Infant - took off $4), $0.75/1 (Huggies mailer), and $0.50/1 (SS 5/15/11) = paid $6.73/2!
2 Oscar Mayer Lunch Meat: 2/$5. Used $1/2 (SS 5/15/11) = paid $4/2.
2 Smuckers Jelly: 2/$4. Used $1/2 (RP 5/22/11) = paid $3/2.
M&Ms: $0.69. I realized at the register that I hadn't grabbed a filler item to use my $3RR from last time, so I just got these.
Total spent: $12.30.

We ended our shopping trip at Walmart for the rest of the weekly groceries. Nothing too notable, except free Ore-Ida Sweet Potato Fries (Facebook promo no longer available), and free Oscar Mayer Cracker Combo and Deli Meat (Kraft First Taste).

Walgreens, CVS, and Target - Diapers and Candy!

Our first stop of the day was Walgreens. I picked size 4 diapers for this stop because I knew there was a diaper sale at CVS too, and I was going to get size 1 diapers there. Unfortunately, they don't sell the big boxes of size 1's at CVS, so I had to get more size 4's there. So Jonah is definitely stocked on diapers for our Colorado trip next month.

2 Huggies Jumbo Packs: 2/$18, get $3RR. Used $3/1 printable and $2/1 printable (no longer available) = paid $13, got $3RR!
2 Hershey's Bliss: 2/$6. Used $1/2 (May Walgreens) and $1/1 (SS 5/1/11) = paid $4/2.
6 Snickers Peanut Butter Squared: $0.39 each (limit 6). Used two B2G1 free (insert, not sure which one) = paid $1.56/6, or $0.26 each!
Used $4RR from last time. Spent $15.18 and got $3RR for next time!

Next was CVS, for more diapers and candy! Did you know you can swipe your Extra Care card more than once per trip and get more coupons? I found that out this week, so I tried it. I got a diapers coupon and a healthcare items coupon the first time, and two candy coupons the second time. The third time it told me no more coupons available, so definitely keep swiping until you get that message.

Huggies Box: $19.00 and Huggies Wipes Refill: $6.00. Get $5ECBs when you spend $25 or more. Used $3.50/1 diapers printable, $0.50/1 wipes (SS 5/15/11), and $4/1 diapers and wipes CVS coupon box = paid $17, got $5ECBs!
Speed Stick deoderant: $2.99, get $2ECBs. Used $0.50/1 (SS 5/1/11) = paid $2.49, got $2ECBs!
2 Hershey's Pieces: 2/$6. Used $2/2 (SS 5/1/11) and $2/1 CVS coupon box = paid $2/2!
3 M&Ms: on clearance for $0.56 each!
Used $9.77 ECBs from last time. Paid $14.63, got $7ECBs back!

And finally, we went to Target to kill a bit of time before dropping some stuff off at the thrift store. That's what happens when your kids get up at 6am - you have to wait for some places to be open. I was really excited to stock up on Seattle's Best Coffee, which I could have gotten for $3.49/package with my coupons (as opposed to over $8 for my Millstone, my absolute favorite brand, but this is a close second). And then I was disappointed because our Target doesn't carry it. Sad.

Propel Zero 6-pack: $3.29. Used $1/1 printable (no longer available) = paid $2.29, or $0.38/bottle!
2 Vitamin C drops: $2.69 each. Used two $0.75/1 (SS 3/27/11) and two $0.50/1 Target printables = paid $1.19 each!

For the Walgreens trip, I used a $10 gift card that I won in a sweepstakes a few weeks ago, so that was completely free! Tomorrow I'm planning to do our weekly regular food shopping at Walmart, and also stop at Cub, if the kids are in the mood...

2 dozen eggs: $1.29 each. 2 free Redbox codes when you buy 2 dozen eggs.

3 Scotch tape: Buy 1 at $1.99 Get 2 Free (ad coupon). Used two $1/1 printables = 3 free! I use these for craft projects, so I always stock up on cheap or free tape.

Total spent: $2.72.

CVS:

Cottonelle toilet paper (18 rolls): $8.99. Used $0.50/1 (SS 3/13/11) = paid $8.49.

Schick Quattro cartridges: $8.99, get $4ECBs. Used $2/1 (SS 4/17/11) = paid $6.99, got $4ECBs.

Yardley soap: $1. Used $0.30/1 (May All You) = paid $0.70. It's lemon scented, and I want to see if I like this kind, because I like fancy soaps, and these are regularly on sale at the drugstores.

Used $16.18ECBs that I had from previous trips. Total spent: $1.40, and got $6ECBs from the deals and $1ECBs from my green bag tag.

Have you signed up for RecycleBank yet? You really should. You can earn points to redeem for high value coupons. One of the easiest ways to earn points is to go to the "Earn Points" tab at the top, and scroll down through your options. I just got 50 points for the "Saw Us on TV?" post, just for clicking the button. There are also short multiple choice quizzes on products like Naked Juice and Coors.

In some areas, you can also earn points for your recycling - they will give you a bar code sticker to put on your recycling bin(s), and you get points based on the amount. This isn't available for us, but you can bet if we move somewhere it is, we'll be doing it.

A Few of My Walmart Deals

I really like Walmart's new coupon policy, which includes the fact that you can now keep the overages from coupons and apply them to your transaction as long as you have something else to take that amount off of. So I picked up some freebies, and while the overages weren't a lot, they were pennies that I was able to save off the rest of my groceries. Not everything is pictured - just the deals.

2 Kotex Liners: $0.94 each. Used two $1/1 (came with samples in mail) = free + $0.06 overage each!
White Cloud Toilet Paper (4 pack): $2. Used $1/1 (All You) = $1.
4 Gain Dryer Sheets (80 count): $3.26 each. Used four $3/1 (RP 2/13/11) = $0.26 each. I was hoping for 40 counts, which are only $1.87 (and would have given me overages), but they didn't have any.
2 Gain Dish Soaps: $0.97 each. Used two $1/1 (P&G mailer) = free + $0.03 overage each!
6 Pert Plus 2-in-1 travel size: $0.97 each. Used six $1/1 (SS 2/27/11) = free + $0.03 overage each!
5 Sensodyne travel size: $0.98 each. Used five $1/1 (RP 1/2/11) = free + $0.02 overage each!

So, I got $0.46 off of the rest of my groceries, plus taking home the items for free. I'm sure there will be some coupons that will result in bigger overages.

First up was CVS. There weren't a ton of deals I wanted this week, but I figured I would use some of my ECBs from last week to get some Easter candy (and I still have some left over to spend next week!).

Kellogg's Frosted Flakes cup: $1. Used $1/1 (magic coupon box) = free!
Candy Deal: Buy $10+ of Easter candy, get $3ECBs.
3 Whoppers Eggs: $2 each. Used $1/3 (SS 2/27/11).
1 Dove Chocolate Bunny: $3. Used $1/1 (magic coupon box).
2 White Palmer Bunnies: 2/$1.
Paid $8, got $3ECBs. Not bad for some yummy candy.
Used $10ECB from last time. Paid $2.02, got $7ECBs! (got $1ECB for my 4th time using a reusable bag)

Next was Walgreens. Again, not a ton of deals, but still a few.

Soft Scrub Total Review and GIVEAWAY

As a Soft Scrub Captain, I occasionally get new products to try out. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect from Soft Scrub Total All-Purpose Cleaner, the newest in their line of Total cleaners (they also have bathroom and kitchen). I normally use dish soap and water for most of my all purpose cleaning, but I'm always willing to try something new.

Did it get things clean? Yes. Shiny and squeaky clean. Unfortunately, this product has a fairly strong bleach-y smell, which I am definitely not a fan of. So, I think I'll stick with my soap and water.

4 Excedrins (2 of them came with bonus packages on top): $5.79, $4.99, $4.69, and $4.69. Get $10ECBs when you buy $20+. Used 2 free products coupons (Facebook promo no longer available) and two $0.75/1 (SS 2/27/11). The two free coupons took off $5.99 each (the maximum value listed)! Paid $6.68/4, got $10ECBs!
Chef Boyardee Ravioli: B1G1 free $1.57. Attempted to use my free product coupon from Walmart promo (no longer available), but realized when I got home that it didn't scan properly. But I got the overages from the Excedrin coupons, so I guess it evens out. Paid $1.57/2.

How's Your Stockpile?

I've been working on organizing our stockpile of food to see what we have extras of and what we should try to use up. Stuffing and oatmeal? Check. Most of the rest of this cabinet is baking supplies, spices, and things we use regularly, like canned fruit and honey.

I also have two boxes worth of extra toiletries and household things to donate. Most were freebies or money makers. Like the 10 tubes of toothpaste in this box...

...or the 4 bottles of Maalox in this one.

Hopefully someone will find those items useful. Meanwhile, I'm looking at the rest of our food, wondering if anyone has some good recipes with green beans or mustard...

Tuesday Tips: Do What Works for YOU

I always have such good intentions when it comes to food and saving money. One thing that I tried to do was save extra individual portions of meals in the freezer for a quick lunch or dinner solution. See that stack on the bottom right? Those are all the extras.

The problem is, we're not really big on eating them. Clearance ice cream that Jesse got for $0.88/pint? That will be gone within a week. Chopped up veggies? Already in the meal plan. Bread? We pull out a loaf every few days. And those meals just sit there.

I have seen many posts on freezer cooking. On having these meals ready to go for a night you don't feel like cooking anything or don't have time. On those nights, I don't generally feel like eating this food either.

What works for me is having parts of meals in the freezer ready to go. Like chopped veggies. Or preportioned meat. Or broth. They make meal prep a lot easier, and we still get a fresh meal out of the deal. Money saving tricks only work if they actually help you out.

I am quickly realizing that CVS is a pretty awesome store for coupon matchups. My favorite part is that you can use as many Extra Care Bucks as you have, without worrying about having a specific number of items like Walgreens. It makes it really easy. That, and the magic coupon box (you scan your Extra Care Card at the red box and you get bonus coupons sometimes when you go).

2 Pampers Jumbo Packs: $8.99, get $2ECBs (limit 1). Used $1/1 (P&G Mailer) = paid $16.98/2, got $2ECBs (because of the limit, I only got the one printout).
2 Colgate Sensitive Toothpastes: used rain check from last week for $3.79 each, get $3.79ECBS. Used two $1/1 (SS 2/6/11) = paid $5.58/2, got $8ECBs. Apparently they round up to the next dollar.
4 Milky Way bars: 4/$2, get $1ECBs when you buy 4. Used B2G1 free (RP 2/6/11) = paid $1.50/4, got $1ECBs.
13 Mentos rolls: $0.50 each. Used 13 $0.50/1 (SS 2/6/11) = all free! There were a lot of inserts at Caribou that week...

Tuesday Tips: Restaurant.com

Have you ever tried Restaurant.com? We did, for the first time, this past weekend when we went to San Antonio. You can get $25 gift certificates for $10 (or less with a promo code, which are frequently released). We ended up getting 4 certificates for less than $10 total. There's a lot more selection in larger cities - I know there are only a few choices for us locally, but this is definitely a good resource to save some money on vacation.

Once you buy your certificates, you can choose to print them right away, or access them later. Most have certain requirements - the big one to look out for is the minimum purchase amount - but you can view all of those before you purchase.

We got 2 winners (one was Azuca Nueva Latino - AMAZING food and great service!), 1 that was okay, and 1 we opted not to use, because it was downtown, on a weekend, right near the big theater, and we didn't want to fight with traffic, or wait in line, or pay for parking. My advice would be to look at the menus they have posted at Restaurant.com, and find reviews online. If you are looking for a vacation, you'll also want to check out where the restaurants are located compared to everything else. This is definitely a resource we will use again!

CVS and Walgreens Trip

Our CVS opened on Sunday, but today was the first chance I had to check it out. Here are my deals:

2 Huggies Jumbo Packs: $8.99 each, get $4ECBs (like Walgreens Register Rewards) when you buy 2. Used two $2/1 (SS 1/23/11) = paid $14.98, got $4ECBs.
3 Vitamin Waters: 3/$3, get $1ECBs when you buy 3. Used three $0.75/1 (peelies that Jesse grabbed from a Casey's display) = paid $0.75/3, got $1ECBs!
Speed Stick Deoderant: $2.99, get $2ECBs. Used $0.50/1 (SS 1/30/11) = paid $2.49, got $2ECBs!
1 CVS Green tag (not shown): $0.99. They scan this tag each trip you use a reusuable bag, and you get $1ECBs every 4th time.

Tuesday Tips: How to Pack a Suitcase

One of my least favorite parts of taking a vacation is packing. I always feel like I'm going to forget something, and, especially now that we have Jonah, there's never enough room for everything. Here are a couple things I've found make packing easier.

#1: Make a list. Start your list of what to bring about a week before your planned trip. You can organize it by person, by piece of luggage, or however is easiest, but start your list early, so you can add to it as you think of things. If you always bring the same basic items along, consider making a master packing list and keeping it for future trips.

#2: Roll clothes. Fold them most of the way, and finish by rolling, as pictured above. It saves space, and helps clothes come out less wrinkly, although wrinkles depend on the fabric.

#3: Bring clothing items you can wear more than once. Jeans are good. One sweatshirt or light jacket that matches your other items will be fine. Choose clothes that you can mix and match and you'll have variety without having too many items.

#4: Don't waste space on shoes. Limit yourself to one or two pairs. I won a pair of Footzy Rolls awhile back, which are ballet flats that roll up and take up almost no space.

#5: Wear your bulkiest clothing on travel days. If you're bringing a pair of heavy boots, a large coat, or other big items, wear those on the plane or in the car so they don't take up your entire suitcase.

#6: Use your samples! Nearly all of the free samples of toiletry items I post are below the 3.4oz. limit for airlines. These are enough to last a few days without having to pack entire bottles. Plus, if they leak, your mess is much more limited.

Here in Minnesota, we're smack dab in the middle of winter. That means no opening windows for fresh air, and lots of soggy boots and shoes coming inside. My house has smelled better. So I was excited to try out a Renuzit Adjustable Cone to see if I could get rid of some of the winter stink.

Tuesday Tips: Go Paperless

Chances are if you regularly read this site and sign up for freebies, the amount of mail you get has increased. And most of that is good (don't worry, I get junk mail too). But there is one way you can cut down on the paper in your mailbox: Go paperless with your bills!

Bank statements, credit card statements, and cell phone bills are all available online. You can view them there, or save them to your computer to access later. I am working on switching all of our statements over to paperless, except for a few (like rent and our electric bill) that don't have that format.

My one word of caution is to only do this if you regularly keep up on your bills, or have a set day/time that you check all of your balances. Otherwise, not having those paper statements telling you how much you owe could be big trouble!
